So I've been listening to tons of demo reels (scouting, tee hee!). After hearing many, I have a few tips that won't want to make the scouter pull their hair out with frustration.
1. Don't pick music that switches left and right stereo. I found someone who used that for a good amount of time (5-10 seconds) and my mind went crazy! It just makes your head spin! Don't do it please!
2. Don't make your first voice on your reel your super high child voice (that's right girls, I know you'll have at least one on your demos!) because it pierced my brain TT_TT. Ow....Ow.....Ow.....
3. DON'T MAKE EVERY VOICE A SUPER HIGH CHILD VOICE!!!!! On average people will do about 10 voices on a demo reel. About 6 out of 10 will be high pitch child voices. Yes, yes we all know you can do a cute child voice. Most people can. It's not that that isn't good and dandy, but it's not what most people are looking for, and if they are then 1 or 2 voices out of 10 on a demo will be enough!
All of you are so talented, and most voice actors use their natural voices! Vic Mignogna, Justin Cook, Chuck Huber, Maile Flanagan! And that's just to name a few!
Half the roles I've auditioned for I used my normal voice and got kind remarks on, but then there's the occasional, oh yeah! I can do Ash Ketchum too ya know? (Well, for the most part ^_^). So all of you who want to make demo reels be confident in yourself! I am so honored to hear such amazing voices everyday! But half the time I only get these high pitch sounds and not the beautiful natural voices you have been so blessed to be born with! TT_TT
